  5. True BASIC, designed by John Kemeny and Tom Kurtz, the authors of the 
  6. original BASIC, is an extremely powerful, yet easily learned, 
  7. structured programming language that offers increased speed, 
  8. extraordinary graphics and great functional flexibility to programmers 
  9. of all levels.

  11. The True BASIC Development Package for X Windows consists of the 
  12. platform-independent True BASIC Language System, toolkits for advanced, 
  13. graphics-oriented scientific functions, on-line manual pages, built-in 
  14. matrix operations, dynamic, resizable arrays, local and global
  15. variables, resursion, PostScript (TM) output, structured error handling, 
  16. modules and pictures for encapsulating data, user-defined coordinate 
  17. systems, mouse and keyboard interfaces, image processing functions, 
  18. animation tools, colormap controls, font manager support, the ability 
  19. to integrate C routines and shell commands into BASIC programs along 
  20. with the option to create compiled or stand-alone executables.

  22. The True BASIC Development Package allows the user to create programs 
  23. which take advantage of the powerful graphics of X Windows without the 
  24. complexity normally associated with colormap- based, event-driven window 
  25. systems.  At the same time, functions are provided to support X-specific 
  26. features such as shared and dynamic colors, bitmap files, and the fonts.
